Known scientifically as Dendrocalamus asper, Petung bamboo is also called ‘giant bamboo’ due to its impressive size. It’s an evergreen variety known for its large and straight culms that can reach 30m (nearly 100ft) in height. Traditionally used in the making of furniture, musical instruments, boats, household utensils, houses and bridges, the timber is thick, strong and durable.
We harvest our Petung bamboo at the optimum time of year and when it has reached full maturity, to minimize shrinkage and cracking, and this care shows in the quality of the grain. Our harvesting practices take the health of the grove into account, maintaining the supply of nutrients, and protecting young culms and shoots for the sake of these cherished natural habitats.
Production Process
We harvest only mature bamboos 5 to 6 years old, at the right time of year and in dry weather to prevent shrinkage and cracking. We cut the stem 30cm above ground to ensure optimum regrowth and nutrient supply through the roots, as well as the viability of the bamboo grove. To make sure that the bamboos have reached maturity and for legal compliance, we mark each bamboo with symbols to indicate the grove, the owner and the year it was planted.
Pile of freshly cut bamboo ready for the treating process. To prepare culms for treating, we cut or drill them, depending on their intended usage. We drill through the centre of the culm, from end to end, to make bamboo poles. We welcome requests for bespoke cutting lengths.
The bamboo is soaked in a pool of cold water with 5%-10% borax and boric acid, so that the salts seep through the grain. Bamboo poles are treated for 5-6 days.
Cleaning and smoothing the dried bamboo poles using a hand grinder and smoothing plane.
Staining bamboo poles with synthetic wax (Paraffin). Packaging bamboo poles after they’ve been waxed.
We fit the container with materials to ensure that the bamboo is safe during transport. We also treat the entire container with drying chemicals to reduce humidity, preventing the bamboo from cracking or producing mildew.
